Royal Road:
Eterna's Source has an interesting magic system

webnovels/lightnovels:

Magi Craft Meister has something called "engineering/craft" magic,  basically, magic used to build normal stuff (like pipes) and magical tools (like a plate that heat food or golems), but I personaly don't think the story is that good.
Hachinan tte, Sore wa Nai Deshou! has an MC that is a mage, and has an enormous quantity of magic, wich he uses to attack, create stuff (like fermenting food for wine making). It's really a calm story.
She Professed Herself The Pupil Of The Wiseman has an MC that Is an Summoner (the light novel version I find to be more interesting), and the summon aspect can be really interesting. the MC can change some of his summons with a crystal of an element.
The Reincarnated Person Doesn’t Want to Cheat has a magic system where the people offer their magic to spirits fo the elements to use spells.
Youjo Senki has an MC that is a mage fighting In a war (it isn't a simple fantasy story, the world has a lot of technology and magic)

It hasn't gotten to the point where he's deriving most of his power from one of the magic systems, but one of the overarching themes is developing and integrating knowledge to become more powerful.
I put words on the Internet for you to read.

Hey there! At the risk of self promotion, can you take a look at Life Magic? It focuses more on clever ways to use magic than force- everything from making carbonated beverages to advanced building materials.

I've had some good feedback, 28 reviews over 4.5 stars average, so I hope you enjoy it.

If you don't mind recommendations away from RRL,

Mistborn (Western Novel) (3 books, complete) - http://www.rednovels.net/book/Mistborn-1/
Magic in this world is based on the consumption of certain metals (depending if you are born with the aptitude). E.g. Copper could pull metal toward you, iron could push metal away from you, tin could enhance your 5 senses (could be wrong, I can't remember each specific use). Anyway essentially you end up being able to fly around 'pulling' yourself using the metal on the side of a building and such. Really cool novel, would recommend.

Tarrin Kael's Sennendar Universe (8 books, complete) - http://www.weavespinner.net/worlds_of_fe...rin%20Kael
Although the website isn't very great. Would recommend downloading the Word file and changing it to PDF in your preferred format - http://forums.sennadar.com/viewforum.php?f=25
This has 4 different types of magic.
Sorcery: Imagine the world is filled in an imaginary spider web encompassing everything (mana). A sorcerer is capable of 'pulling apart' a weave and finding the different elements within. To cast spells the MC has to 'weave' together in certain patterns etc.
Druidic magic
Wizardry
Priest
Good character development for MC and the story is on a LoTR epic fantasy scale

Happy reading!

A story about a Drow,
Who was a thief,
And wanted to stay low.

A story below ground,
Where creatures grow,
And Empires found.

I've already bought your book and finished it as well as caught up with your recent chapters. It does frustrate  me when they keep falling for you know who's bullshit, I also keep wondering how and if you're going to write them out of it. I do love it though and i hope to se another book on amazon.

Hey, if you don't mind some shameless self advertising, i think my fiction has a really interesting concept of "magic".
Basically, instead of using mana or wacky powers my MC uses organic nano machines that are bound by the laws of nature.

Still, with the right ingredients, these nano machines can make some cool things.

I also think it adds individuality since I try to support everything scientifically but at the same time trying to show just how much these little beings can do.

Symbiote
Will dies in the destruction of the earth... But he discovers that his memories have been inserted into a genetically enhanced baby, many years in the future, who can control organic nanomachines called Nanides.
With a space full of opportunities and many warring factions, Will needs to change in order to survive in this new cruel world.

It looks really interesting. I have seen similar takes on magic with nanites and i always enjoyed those.
btw I've been reading it since undefined

Yeah, I try to make it interesting while not making it completely unrealistic.
Though I really love science so it I enjoy my time writing it :)

i'll self promo my work here.

Curse of the Forsaken http://royalroadl.com/fiction/8513

It's got a different magic system and a MC who has some pretty nice strengths in it. that said take the content warnings seriously. the MC doesn't really get into the magic till later in the book.
If I had a penny for how many people found me unattractive, I'd be very attractive.

Thanks, and I am already a fan of your story. I stopped reading it so I can binge it in a week or two.

First! In modern supernatural, I'd suggest the webserial Pact, by Wildbow. [Link] - It rambled at some points, but the magic was very intriguing. Original I'd say, but I'm not oversaturated in the genre. As always, talented guy. And free.

Second, I'll mention myself. I went for unique and I've been told I succeeded. Great compliments. The magic is based in metaphysics and concept manipulation, essences. There's a scene wherein the heroes fall for a detail descent, a trap set by a witch. In it, the hall they're traveling down is losing information. And if they cannot get out, they will begin to break down.

As for the main character, they're an expert, sliding towards power near the end. Their main trait, I'd say, is intelligence. They innovate, have insight. There's 80K available on the site, here. You can find the RRL listing in my sig.

Third, I cannot for the life of me remember the name of this one. It was a story where the magic system involved lots of drudgery and hand positions. I haven't read it yet, but I heard good things. I'll have to find it again later.

Good luck with your reading, Town.

In fictionpress you can find Mother of Learning.

For a fan fiction you can certainly try Harry Potter and The Methods of Rationality.

Thanks for the recommendation. I read lightening does strike twice and I'm caught up with it. I'm gonna read mother of learning soon. Im probably gonna give harry potter and the methods of rationality a pass until much later. I did bookmark the page so I'll evebtually get to it.

If you don't mind buying books on amazon, I'd recommend anything by Brandon Sanderson. Amazing author who introduces new magic systems with every new series he writes. Unlike other author (coff coff, Ruthfuss and coff coff, Martin), he releases 3 new books a year.

For a quick read, try "Emperor's Soul", which received a Hugo award

For the full Sanderson goodness, in a complete series, Mistborn

For the ongoing Epic with 2 books standing at 1000 pages each, Stormlight Archive.
