The story starts off with (I believe) the MC dying. He meets with a God who gives him an ability to learn (I think when he kills something - but I may be wrong here). Then he falls through a trap door and arrives (falling to the ground from very high up) in a new world - very close to two giant monsters fighting.
He eventually meets up with someone and learns the way the new world works and that it is a series of connected worlds/zones.

That is all I remember about the story and help finding it is appreciated - I've had no luck in my own searches.

You're probably thinking about Re:monster or Tenshi Shitara Slime Denshi Datta ken. Reincarnation and RPG/levels.

It's definitely not Re:Monster (I've read this - but I need to catch up with the latest releases), and based on the description of Tenshi Shitara Slime Denshi Datta ken I don't think its that either (I don't remember the [Great Sage], and in the one I'm looking for the MC remained human). Based on the first chapter of Tenshi, I am definitely going to read it - thanks.
