This story follows the RWBY cannon up until the end of Volume 5. Then it takes a turn to follow Whitley Schnee, and his adventure in cleansing the Schnee Dust Company, and troubles that his father had invited since its rocky history.

Watching the RWBY web series will definitely assist you in understanding the Remnant universe, however, there shouldn't be any troubles in understanding the story, as it doesn't rely too much on events that have happened in the RWBY series. If it does mention certain events, it will give some context on said event in order to set the scene or to inform the reader.
